As a manager, you must learn how to implement changes in business well for all employees so that they can stand behind, follow and support you. A manager wants to look for the different management styles that have been used and find a way to improve them. Managers must pay attention to the individual needs of their employees and look for a way to challenge them and help them think outside the box.

Leading
As a manager you need to be in charge of overseeing all the little details of the company. As a leader, you want to find a way to gain the support of your employees and have them follow you no matter where you will go. Therefore, being a leader is some quietly different with being a manager.

A manager will work most on how to control and manage employee, and help them do on the right ways, however, a leader needs to find ways to make the business head into the future in the right direction. To be a great leader, you should look outward to find best things for your employees and your business. A leader needs to learn how to look for the problems within an organization and search for ways to fix them. Thus, we can say that, a leader will have little communication with employees, and no managing responsibility, but he has significantly important role in finding ways for business development and growth, and find the solutions to get employees get excited.

How to say lay- off your employees

Layoff is a fact that businesses have already thought at the time of difficult and challenging market as today, and later on, competition and pressure on job will be higher because level of laying off is more and more increasing. No business owner want to lay off employees as they are afraid of informing employees that they no longer have a job. You should let the employees know what the current state of the business is and that you have no option but to layoff some employees in order to make it possible to retain all the others. It's important to run a meeting to announce for laying- off employees. A meeting needs to have the representatives of board of directors and the ones of other departments to give a suitable reason and help the laid off employees will feel better, and release anxiety for other employees. Here are some things you need to do to meet this purpose

  1. Talk with employees about the current state of your business, about the difficulties that board of directors are  facing, as well as current economic situation and some key figures illustrated that you have no option to choose except for laying off some employees.
  2. You should announce in front of others that you will reduce management salaries first before making cuts to frontline worker's pay. Do not underestimate the importance of keeping your font-line workers happy. Balancing everything in your job are better.
  3. Eliminate all unnecessary expenses. This is easier said than done. Start to make plan to see which cost you should cut, for example the overtime payment. Try to push them complete task during the normal working time.  Let them know that overtime hours are not necessary during the recession or difficult economic situation
  4. However, you should do possible things to avoid the layoffs, for example reducing worker hours.  Hold conversations with the employees you will lay off. Let them know exactly what the next steps in the process will be, what benefits may still be available to them, and what options they have for unemployment benefits. Give these employees time to gather their personal belongings and say goodbye to their colleagues

The goal with all these suggestions is to turn in a bad situation into a situation where both employee and employer can work together and understand the situation with dignity and mutual respect.

Today, here to answer these questions and more is CEO of Mattel, Inc., Robert Eckert. Bob joined Mattel in May 2000, a 23-year veteran of Kraft, Inc. At Kraft, he served as, most recently, as president and chief executive officer. Bob received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Arizona, an MBA in marketing and finance from Northwestern University's Kellogg School. It's always great to be around Pepperdine. DS: As a business leader and family man, I'd like to ask how you handle work-life balance and also how you encourage those who work for you to manage work-life balance.
RE: You know, it's a real challenge, and folks understand the challenge of how much time and energy it takes to do business well, and yet how much time and energy it takes to do family well. And I think the key is to set priorities. So there are things I'd like to do in life that I've said, "You know what? I'm just not going to do those right now. I'm going to focus on this and this." And then something falls off because I've accomplished that, and then I bring up the thing I want to do. And just by setting priorities and working on the two or three things that are most important to you, that works. So, for example, I've always worked pretty hard, a fairly long number of hours, but I don't think I've ever missed one of my kids' athletic events. That was just really important to me to go to high school basketball games or junior high volleyball games or whatever. I made it a priority, and I did it. And I think when folks don't set priorities well, they get caught up into what they didn't do, and they're not doing what they like to do. DS: You received your MBA from Kellogg School at Northwestern.
